Mr. Joseph Maina
Head Teacher - Thorn Tree School
Message From the Head Teacher
Thorn Tree School has, over the years, been a reference point of and centre of academic excellence. Our KCPE graduates graced the pages of the national newspapers every time results were announced as they posted some of the highest marks countrywide. At one point, two of our candidates took the second and seventh positions in the whole of Kenya. For several days afterwards, hordes of reporters from electronic and print media camped in the school, seeking to get to the bottom of our secret to success. Over the years, our learners have been readily admitted to the top High Schools in the country.
The CBC Curriculum
Thorn Tree School offers the Kenya's CBC Curriculum. The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is an innovative approach to education, emphasizing the development of practical skills and critical thinking. It promotes continuous assessment over exams, tailoring learning to individual students. The CBC goes beyond traditional rote learning, incorporating real-world applications and fostering holistic development. It seeks to prepare students for the challenges of the modern world by cultivating a diverse set of competencies, ensuring they are not just academically proficient but equipped with the skills necessary for success in a dynamic, global landscape

We have active extra-curricular activities such as ball games, athletics, swimming, skating, ballet dancing, chess, Robotics and coding… the list is long. It is our intention to tap the talent of every learner who is lucky enough to land on our hands. .
The Playgroup
In the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the Playgroup stage is designed to lay the foundation for a child's holistic development. This level primarily focuses on fostering early social, emotional, and cognitive skills through play-based learning. It provides a nurturing environment where children engage in activities that stimulate curiosity, creativity, and basic cognitive abilities.
CBC Pre School Level
In the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), PP1 (Pre-primary 1) and PP2 (Pre-primary 2) represent the first two years of pre-primary education, typically catering to children aged four and five. These stages are crucial in laying the foundation for a child's formal education and align with the global understanding of early childhood development.
CBC Primary School Level
The primary level in the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) spans from Grade 1 to Grade 6 and serves as a crucial phase in a child's educational journey. During these formative years, the curriculum focuses on building core competencies in subjects like literacy, numeracy, science, and social studies. Beyond traditional rote learning, the CBC emphasizes practical skills, critical thinking, and continuous assessment. This approach not only ensures a comprehensive understanding of subjects but also fosters the development of character and values. The primary level of CBC aims to provide a well-rounded education that prepares students for the challenges of higher academic levels and equips them with essential life skills.
CBC Junior School Level
The Junior Secondary level now called just junior school, in the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) encompasses Grades 7 to 9 and marks the transition from primary education to more specialized and in-depth studies. During this phase, the curriculum aims to build on the foundational knowledge acquired in primary school, offering a more diversified set of subjects. The emphasis is on developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of various disciplines. Practical applications of knowledge are incorporated, preparing students for the challenges of higher education and the evolving demands of the global landscape. The Junior Secondary level in the CBC focuses on equipping students with both academic proficiency and essential life skills.
